REAP tool

The 'Resource & Energy Analysis Programme' is a database and modeling system which shows the total impacts of the throughput of materials and energy in the economy.

It calculates this for 123 sectors of production by industry, and 68 types of consumption by households and government, at local and regional level.

The REAP data system focuses on 3 main indicators of environmental performance in production and consumption:

  • CO2 emissions, as the largest cause of climate change, together with energy flows as the main cause of CO2 emissions
  • Material flow and mass balance: although the heaviest materials are often the least damaging, this approach can highlight the process which lie behind the other indicators
  • Eco-footprint, as the overall measure of global impact

These are each calculated in the REAP system for the UK, and then allocated to regions by their profile of production and consumption.

The REAP system was produced in a partnership led by SEI-York with CURE and WWF-UK. It is now available in a beta Version 0.9, but development is continuing, on scenario modeling, sectoral applications, appraisal and benchmarking toolkits. For further details see - www.reap.sei.se
